The Commissioner of Official Languages criticized Air Canada’s outgoing chief executive for a four‑minute condolence video that was almost entirely in English following a fatal crash in New York.

Condolence video details

Air Canada’s outgoing CEO posted a four‑minute video that contained only two French words – “bonjour” and “merci”.

Commissioner’s response

The Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada rebuked the CEO for the English‑only message.

The commissioner’s office recorded 2,425 complaints about the video, including 98 complaints that arrived after the end of the current financial year on March 31.

Related incident and leadership change

The video followed a crash of an Air Canada regional jet that took off from Montreal and crashed at LaGuardia Airport in New York on March 22, killing two pilots and sending more than 40 people to hospital.

Air Canada announced in March that CEO Michael Rousseau will retire by the end of the third quarter of 2026.
