How we use AI
Most of what you read on Terminair is written by AI models from published sources. This page lists the models, what each one does, and how the output is checked.
The models
| Job | Model | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Pulling facts out of each article, in English, whatever the article's language | Meta Llama 3.1 8B Instruct (open weights) | Cloudflare Workers AI |
| Writing a story's headline, paragraphs and "why it matters" from those facts | OpenAI gpt-oss-120b (open weights) | Cloudflare Workers AI |
| Translating headlines | Meta M2M100 (open weights) | Cloudflare Workers AI |
| Columns: writing, and a second model checking the claims against the sources | Claude, from Anthropic | Anthropic's API |
| Ask: answering a question from retrieved stories | Claude, from Anthropic | Anthropic's API |
| The short introduction to the daily bulletin | Claude, from Anthropic | Anthropic's API |
News stories use open models only. Claude is used for columns, Ask and the bulletin introduction, never to write a news story. Models change from time to time; this page is updated when they do.
What the models are given
The news models read public articles from publishers and nothing about our readers. Ask sends your question and the stories it retrieved to Anthropic; what we keep and for how long is in the privacy policy.
How the output is checked
- Every paragraph cites its sources. Code rejects a paragraph that cites nothing or cites a source that does not exist. The numbers next to a paragraph link to the publisher.
- Plain prose only. Code rejects headings, bullet lists, labels and repeated sentences.
- No brief, no publication. A story appears only after its headline and text have been written and have passed these checks. If the models fail, the story waits.
- "Why it matters" is optional. It is shown only when the model gives one to two plain sentences that cite a source and do not repeat the story. Otherwise it is left out, and we do not ask the model a second time.
- Columns are checked by a second model against the text of each cited source, and rejected if a claim, number or date is not in that text.
- Ask fails closed. A sentence that cites no source means nothing is shown.
Where people are involved
People write the rules and instructions the models follow, watch automated checks on quality, and handle corrections. A person does not read each story before it is published, and the models can still be wrong. That is why every story links to its sources. See the editorial policy for the full picture.
Limits and cost
Model spending for the news is capped at a fixed daily amount, enforced in code. When the cap is reached, stories wait unpublished until it resets, and nothing is published without being written first. This means that on a busy day some stories appear later than the news they report.
