The Department for Transport has issued a tender to recruit an experienced banking adviser to evaluate the economic case for a third runway at Heathrow, with the contract valued at around £3 million for three years and an option to extend for a further year.

Chancellor John Healey has already given strong backing to the £49 billion airport development, while Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed doubts, refusing to support the project five times in a recent interview; the proposed runway would raise Heathrow’s capacity to 756,000 flights and 150 million passengers annually.
