The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is moving its Virtual Tower technology from research to market, with the technology company Quantom taking the prototype created at the DLR Institute for Flight Guidance into product development.

The virtual tower places the remote tower operator’s workstation in a virtual environment, letting air traffic controllers and flight‑information staff use external views, displays and controls via VR headsets, eliminating the need for a permanently installed workstation with extensive infrastructure.

Why it matters

Smaller and regional airports could benefit by sharing resources and personnel or adjusting operating hours to actual demand.
