Network Rail and contractor Kier will begin work on a £115 million investment at Manchester Airport station this winter, with the first major stage commencing on Sunday 6 December 2026 and the station closed for one day.

The programme includes extending platforms 1, 2 and 3, upgrading track layouts on the approach to the station and modernising train signalling systems, while engineers install a utility bridge for electrical cables during the closure; the existing bridge will be removed at Easter 2027 and a new one built later in the year, with rail‑replacement buses running between Wilmslow and the airport and Metrolink services unaffected.
