United Airlines Flight 884, scheduled to leave Washington Dulles International Airport for Rome Fiumicino at 5:35 p.m. on 2 October, was delayed for nearly 12 hours before being cancelled at about 4 a.m. Saturday.

The airline cited a cockpit malfunction, severe thunderstorms, refueling, crew changes and additional maintenance checks as causes of the delay, and said crew time limits forced the cancellation; passengers were rebooked on an extra flight that departed more than 25 hours after the original scheduled time.
