State Senator James Skoufis has asked Governor Kathy Hochul to put forward Stewart International Airport as New York’s candidate for the United States Space Academy, a federal program overseen by NASA.

Stewart Airport, which shares facilities with Stewart Air National Guard Base and lies near West Point and major transport links, features an 11,817‑foot runway and existing aerospace and military infrastructure. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 28 establishing a presidential commission to develop plans for the NASA‑led academy, and NASA is now gathering state input on possible sites, aiming to break ground as early as 2027 with instruction potentially starting in 2028.
