Royal Mail expects 500,000 gift returns in first week of January 2026

UK Royal Mail expects half a million gifts to be returned in the first week of January 2026, with returns up about 25%, while the UK Office for National Statistics reports retail sales volumes rose 1.8% in January 2026, the largest monthly gain since May 2024, driven by online sports supplements.

WAPI counted 11 to 13 delivery days out of 15 weekdays between 21 December 2026 and 8 January 2027 across 18 EU markets, and six markets – Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – each have only 11 delivery days, losing four weekdays to public holidays, with Latvia’s holiday on 31 December, Bulgaria moving its 26 December holiday to Monday 28 December, and Romania closing on both 6 and 7 January.
