Powrachute petitions FAA for temporary exemption under MOSAIC rule

Powrachute LLC has petitioned the FAA for a temporary exemption to certify newly manufactured powered parachutes while awaiting approval of an updated industry standard. The request follows the July 24 implementation of the FAA’s Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule.

The petition seeks relief from five provisions of the Federal Aviation Regulations, asks that newly manufactured aircraft receive and retain special airworthiness certificates in the light‑sport category, and wants qualifying kit‑assembled powered parachutes to remain eligible for experimental certificates under Section 21.191(k). Powered parachutes were excluded from the FAA’s acceptance of new ASTM standards ahead of the MOSAIC deadline, and the exemption would apply until the FAA accepts a corrected version of the powered‑parachute integration standard, ASTM F3837‑26. The FAA has not yet ruled on the request, and public comments can be submitted through Oct. 26 under docket FAA‑2026‑11257.
