A new LED lighting system was switched on during the first week of October at Kelowna International Airport to improve runway visibility and safety.

LED lighting upgrade

The system modernises ageing infrastructure and updates lighting on the runway, taxiway, approach, signage and all control systems. YLW CEO Sam Samaddar said the transition delivers enhanced safety and improved energy efficiency.

The brighter, more precise lighting makes the runway and airfield environment more visible to pilots, especially during wildfire smoke events and low‑visibility conditions. Residents may notice a new array of five flashing lights at each end of the runway, which are normal parts of the upgraded system and not signs of emergency or hazard.

Funding and impact

The modernisation is part of YLW’s ongoing commitment to innovation, safety and operational excellence, maintaining its position as one of Canada’s leading airports. The project was paid for through airport revenues and reserves with no taxation impact to the public.
