CORSIA marks ten years with expanding coverage and rising compliance costs

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) was adopted at the 2016 ICAO Assembly and is now in its tenth anniversary year, with participation from more than 130 countries.

By the end of this year CORSIA is expected to have mitigated around 200 million tonnes of CO₂, and from 2027 it will cover approximately 85 % of global aviation emissions, while up to $120 billion could be mobilised in climate finance through the end of the scheme.

The EU is considering extending its Emissions Trading System to destinations within 5,000 km of the EU, using Frankfurt as a geographic centre, a move IATA estimates would raise compliance costs by 40 % to EUR 280 billion over the 2027‑2040 period.
