On October 6 and 7, 2026, Iran‑backed Houthi rebels struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport, killing three people – two female residents at Abha and a Sudanese resident at King Khalid – and injuring a total of 36, with 28 injuries reported at Abha and eight at King Khalid.

Both airports sustained damage, and the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said the injuries ranged from minor to serious and that all injured were taken to hospitals while it worked with security agencies to assess the damage and protect passengers and employees. The Saudi‑led coalition responded by destroying dozens of Houthi military sites across Saada, Al‑Hudaydah, Al‑Jawf and Marib, including 82 legitimate targets and several missile storage facilities.

The coalition’s retaliation was aimed at the missile platforms used in the airport attacks.

Why it matters

The attacks and subsequent damage assessments require airlines and airport operators to adjust operations and enhance passenger safety measures.
