A British Airways service from London Heathrow to Chicago turned back over Ireland and landed back at Heathrow following a technical problem, with passengers later rebooked on other flights.

Flight details and return

British Airways flight BA295 departed Heathrow for Chicago on 5 October and returned to Heathrow after a technical issue. The aircraft turned back over Ireland, circled for several hours and landed safely at Heathrow, where passengers disembarked normally and airline staff began arranging onward travel.

According to airlinegeeks.com, the Boeing 777‑200 aircraft (registration G‑VIIA) descended from 36,000 ft to 9,000 ft over Ireland in about ten minutes, the pilots declared an emergency once below 10,000 ft, and the flight remained airborne for about five hours before landing.

Theyeshivaworld.com reported that the same flight descended from 37,000 ft to roughly 28,000 ft before returning to the United Kingdom, with oxygen masks deploying from the cabin ceiling during the descent and the aircraft circling over Bristol to burn fuel before landing.

Passenger handling

No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. Many passengers were rebooked on new flights departing the following Tuesday.

What's still unclear

Sources differ on the altitude at which the aircraft descended: airlinegeeks.com cites a drop from 36,000 ft to 9,000 ft, while theyeshivaworld.com cites a descent from 37,000 ft to roughly 28,000 ft.
