National strike in Belgium sees Brussels protest, arrests and flight cancellations

On 9 October, a national strike in Belgium coincided with a protest in Brussels that ended after 14:00, during which three STIB buses were damaged near Brussels Midi station and police arrested 18 people, including 13 minors and five adults.

Police seized Molotov cocktails, gasoline, pyrotechnic devices, a knife, a hammer, lighters and gloves, and used water cannons, tear gas and pepper spray to disperse protesters, including masked youths who clashed with police near Brussels Central Station.

About 140 flights were cancelled at Brussels Airport on 9 October.
