Piper PA-30 hits deer on takeoff, makes rough landing with gear collapse in Iowa

A Piper PA-30 struck a deer while taking off from Rockwell City Municipal Airport at about 7:30 pm on Saturday and later suffered a landing‑gear collapse when it landed at Spencer Municipal Airport, with four people on board and no reported injuries.

Fire departments from Spencer, Fostoria and Everly, an ambulance and Clay County sheriff’s deputies stood by as a precaution, the airport was briefly closed for runway inspection, and the FAA is investigating the incident; the collapsed gear was found on Monday, Oct. 5, and the 1966 aircraft is registered to a Chicago company.
