KLM to cancel flights from Oct. 26 to early March to retain intercontinental aircraft

KLM announced it will cancel some flights between October 26 and early March to keep more intercontinental aircraft available as reserves, according to the airline.
The airline said the decision follows last weekend’s short‑notice cancellation of at least five intercontinental routes due to technical issues, and it cites strikes, extreme weather, natural phenomena and maintenance needs as factors that can keep aircraft grounded. A KLM spokesperson noted that every aircraft on the ground costs the airline money, while Operational Director Mathieu Essenberg said the network adjustment, though not preferred, provides customers with earlier notice and greater flexibility.
Why it matters
Cancelling flights to keep aircraft off the ground helps KLM avoid the costs associated with idle planes.
