Mark Richardson, 61, died when his Glasair aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Paine Field Airport.

Crash circumstances

The crash occurred around 2:48 p.m. as the plane was taking off from the main runway and impacted about 750 feet from the runway in a wooded area. The wreckage caught fire, which was later extinguished by the Paine Field Fire Department.

Richardson was the only person on board and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Airport response and investigation

The runway was closed for about an hour while fire department and airport operations crews responded. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
