Launch details
Southwest Airlines launched its first U.S. airline plugin in ChatGPT on October 6, 2026. The initiative is described as the first step of a phased AI‑powered booking approach developed with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.
Plugin capabilities
The plugin allows travelers to discover Southwest destinations, search for flights, compare fares and refine itineraries within ChatGPT. It displays Southwest’s four fare categories – Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra – and currently supports cash fares only, without Rapid Rewards award bookings.
Testing by Upgraded Points found that fares shown through the plugin matched prices on Southwest’s website.
Booking process
Customers must transfer to Southwest.com to enter passenger and payment information to finalize a reservation.
Executive comments
Sabrina Callahan, Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, said the initiative reflects changing travel‑planning behavior and shows how Southwest tests and learns from AI innovations. Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer, emphasized building a secure, scalable AI foundation to add new features faster and more thoughtfully.
Future AI features
Southwest aims to provide a simpler, more direct path from inspiration to search to booking options and plans to add more AI features over time, though it has not said whether flights will be booked directly in chat.
