CORSIA marks 10 years with over 130 states and aims for 85% emissions coverage by 2027
The ICAO Assembly adopted the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) in 2016 and is now promoting further implementation on its 10th anniversary, with more than 130 states participating.
IATA expects that from 2027 CORSIA will cover 85 percent of global emissions from international air traffic, with 200 million tonnes of CO₂ already compensated by the end of 2026 and up to US$120 billion potentially mobilised over the scheme’s lifespan.
IATA warns that expanding the EU Emissions Trading System to more international flights could weaken CORSIA and calls for EU ETS revenues to be directed toward sustainable aviation fuels, infrastructure and new technologies.
