On Tuesday morning at about 10:30 AM local time, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-900 clipped the right horizontal stabilizer of an Air Canada Boeing 777‑200LR while taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport.

The collision lodged the Delta winglet in the 777’s tail, tearing off the winglet and creating a large gash; no injuries were reported among the 275 passengers and 15 crew on the Delta flight or on the Air Canada aircraft. Both planes were taken out of service for inspection and repairs, and the FAA opened an investigation with the NTSB also notified.

Passengers were expected to be rebooked and faced flight delays, with Delta’s flight to Tokyo delayed more than eight hours and the Air Canada return flight to Toronto cancelled.

Why it matters

The incident will require rebooking of passengers and cause significant flight delays for the airlines involved.
