Melbourne Airport launches new multi‑level pick‑up and drop‑off zones

The airport opened the zones at 4 am, adding 115 drive‑in/drive‑out bays and expanding capacity for up to 75 million passengers a year by 2047.
Opening and layout
The new pick‑up and drop‑off zones opened at 4 am on the day of the report and are located in the T123 Transport Hub within the multi‑level car park, accessed via Exit 19 to Naarm Way. A skybridge or 19‑metre wide bridge connects the zones to the terminals.
The pick‑up zone provides 115 drive‑in/drive‑out bays, almost triple the number in the former forecourt zone, while the drop‑off zone offers almost double the bays of the old ramp.
Ramp closure and passenger flow
The departures ramp closed after 56 years of operation, with cars now diverted to the new zone inside the undercover car park. Departing travellers walk between 172 metres and 350 metres from the drop‑off zone to the terminals, and arriving travellers walk between 285 metres and 380 metres from the pick‑up zone.
Passengers leaving Melbourne are dropped off on level 3 and must travel to level 2 for departures; passengers being picked up exit on the ground floor and also travel to level 2 for collection.
Facilities and cost
The zone includes undercover waiting areas with seating and toilets, allowing five minutes of free waiting in the pick‑up area before moving to a section where a 15‑minute wait is permitted before charges apply.
Construction of the new zone cost a combined $500 million.
Future capacity
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the airport expects to welcome 75 million passengers a year by 2047.
