An ATR‑42 operated by the Nigerian Air Force crashed near Igbokoda in Ondo state while on a routine mission to Lagos, killing everyone on board. Sources report the aircraft was carrying 20 passengers and five crew members for a total of 25 people, while the Aviation Minister previously said 32 people were aboard, and a House of Representatives panel later listed 25 passengers and seven crew for a total of 32 persons.

Ondo State police said the wreckage remains in the water and a larger machine is needed to pull it out, with assistance from NEMA and other agencies still awaited. The Nigerian Air Force activated search and rescue operations and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau noted it will lead the investigation, offering technical support if formally invited.

President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered flags to be lowered across the country.
