An ATR‑42 operated by the Nigerian Air Force crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State while on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos, killing all aboard.

Crash circumstances

The ATR‑42, tail number NGR 931, was on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when it lost contact with air traffic controllers at 0813 GMT and later crashed near the coastal town of Igbokoda in southwestern Nigeria, close to a naval base.

Fatalities

All 32 people aboard – 25 passengers and seven crew members – were reported killed by several outlets.

One report later stated that the death toll was 25 passengers and crew, correcting an earlier figure of 32.

Official reactions

President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning, ordered flags to be flown at half‑staff, and directed the Nigerian Air Force to launch an investigation.

Governor Alex Otti expressed regret over the death of Sqn. Ahamefule Man‑Ugwueje, an Abia‑born pilot who had married Flt‑Lt. Damilola Adekunle two weeks earlier.

Minister Festus Keyamo said the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers before the crash.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa reported that no survivors were found at the crash site.
