On 30 September 2026 a flydubai Boeing 737 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv experienced a cockpit attack by the co‑pilot, lost altitude rapidly and was diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Sources give different figures for the altitude loss and the number of people on board.

Flight and Attack

Flydubai flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion International Airport on 30 September 2026. The co‑pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. Passengers and crew intervened, and the aircraft diverted to Tabuk Airport where it landed safely.

The co‑pilot is reported to be Omani and had previously operated a flight to Tel Aviv earlier in the year, intending to hijack it but deciding against it because he knew someone on board.

Altitude Loss

During the incident the aircraft lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude in less than 30 seconds.

Another report states the aircraft lost approximately 16,625 feet of altitude in just over 30 seconds.

People on Board

Flydubai said all 172 passengers and crew on board were safe.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior reported 174 passengers and eight crew members aboard the aircraft.

Investigation and Classification

The UAE Attorney‑General confirmed the co‑pilot’s attack with a crash axe and the attempt to take control. UAE authorities are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.

New Zealand Police are investigating the co‑pilot’s time in New Zealand, working with other agencies.

What's still unclear

Sources differ on the altitude loss, reporting more than 14,000 feet versus approximately 16,625 feet, and on the number of people on board, reporting 172 passengers and crew versus 174 passengers and eight crew members.
