Strong winds, low visibility and storms forced the diversion of about a dozen international arrivals and cancelled departures at Heraklion “N. Kazantzakis” Airport.
Weather conditions
The airport experienced strong winds reaching Beaufort force 9, low visibility and thunderstorms that limited operations.
The disruption began around 6:30 pm (18:30) and lasted until about 8:30 pm (20:30).
Flight diversions and cancellations
Approximately 12‑13 international arrivals were diverted to alternative airports, and corresponding departures were cancelled.
Some flights that were scheduled to land at Heraklion returned to their origin because of the low visibility and storms.
Airport response
Airport director Iakovos Ouroanos (also reported as Iakovos Ouranos) said the situation was being monitored.
Passengers were advised to check flight status with airlines and the airport.
