Brazilian competition authority CADE approved American Airlines’ $100 million investment in Azul, giving the carrier roughly an eight‑percent stake, matching United Airlines’ earlier investment that raised its participation to just over eight percent.

The approval grants American the right to appoint a representative to Azul’s board until February 2028 and to its strategic committee until February 2029, but bars the carrier from accessing Azul’s non‑public pricing, capacity, route‑planning and commercial‑strategy data and requires it to withdraw from meetings where such topics are discussed, with reporting obligations to CADE for any stake changes or further acquisitions on the Brazil‑U.S. corridor.

Why it matters

The restriction on accessing Azul’s sensitive commercial data limits American’s ability to obtain competitive intelligence within the Brazilian market.
