Braunschweig court rejects extra compensation claim from German state for Germanwings
The Braunschweig regional court dismissed a claim for additional compensation against the German federal government filed by relatives of the 150 Germanwings crash victims.
The court ruled that the relatives must seek compensation from Germanwings, which takes precedence over claims against the state, citing the Montreal Convention that permits both personal and inherited compensation; 30 relatives had demanded up to €110,000 each from the government, and attorney Julius Reiter announced a possible appeal while questioning the state's actions and the adequacy of 2013‑2014 medical examinations in light of a documented 2009 depressive episode of the co‑pilot.
Reiter said an appeal to the Higher Regional Court of Braunschweig is being considered.
