A Delta Airbus A350-900 clipped the tail of an Air Canada Boeing 777-200LR while taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport, causing damage but no injuries.

Collision details

Delta Air Lines Flight DL7, an Airbus A350-900, clipped the right horizontal stabilizer of Air Canada Flight 785, a Boeing 777-200LR, while taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport at about 10:30 AM local time. The collision left the Delta A350’s left wingtip lodged in the 777’s tail, tearing off the winglet and creating a large gash in the tail.

Passenger and crew impact

No injuries were reported among the 275 passengers and 15 crew members on the Delta flight or among those on the Air Canada aircraft.

Operational consequences

Both aircraft were removed from service for inspection and repairs. The FAA opened an investigation and the NTSB was notified. The Air Canada 777-200LR was being towed to its gate when it stopped short of the gate, placing it in the path of the taxiing Delta A350.

Delta Flight DL7 was scheduled to depart Los Angeles for Tokyo Haneda at 6:08 PM after a delay of more than eight hours. Air Canada Flight AC786, the return service to Toronto, was scheduled to depart at 11:55 AM but was cancelled.
