The China Academy of Aerospace Development and Control (CARDC) is testing a blended wing body aircraft with an 85‑metre wingspan, 43‑metre length and a cruise speed of 987 km/h, designed for up to 800 passengers.
Dimensions and performance
The aircraft has a wingspan of about 85 metres, larger than the Airbus A380, and a length of 43 metres. It is designed to cruise at 987 kilometres per hour, faster than 900 km/h.
Passenger capacity
The blended wing body configuration is projected to carry a maximum of 800 passengers, with some reports suggesting the capacity could exceed 800.
Wind‑tunnel testing
CARDC conducted transonic wind‑tunnel tests on a 1:52 scale model measuring about 80 centimetres in length with a 1.6‑metre wing span. Tests covered Mach numbers from 0.4 to 0.8.
Design goals and interior
The blended wing body design aims to reduce fuel consumption and noise while increasing cargo volume. The interior concept includes lounge areas, family zones, separate cabins and digital windows instead of traditional glass.
