Attack on police patrol
On Saturday 3 October 2026, an armed group opened fire on a municipal police patrol traveling on the state highway that leads to the International Airport of Mazatlán. The assailants were in a white vehicle that was later abandoned with bullet impacts and its doors open.
The patrol driver sought first aid at the Veteran Firefighters base in the El Castillo neighbourhood, and both officers were taken to city hospitals for treatment.
Security response
The Grupo Interinstitucional security operation was deployed immediately after the attack, and preventive patrols continue in the area. The Secretaría de Seguridad Pública de Sinaloa requested the public avoid the area and follow security instructions.
Federal and state agents were also sent to the scene, with a report that 100 Special Forces elements of the Secretariat of National Defense had been dispatched on 27 September.
Airport operations
Authorities said the airport remains open and operates normally for scheduled passenger flights.
