Emergency diversion
Two United States Air Force fighter jets diverted to Shannon Airport after one declared an emergency over the North Atlantic. The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas F‑15E Strike Eagle that experienced a fuel issue and requested priority clearance to the airport.
The first jet landed safely at 4.34 pm, followed shortly by the second aircraft. Fire crews remained at holding points and did not follow the jets down the runway, and both aircraft taxied to a remote parking stand.
Unit and deployment details
The jets are based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina, United States. They had departed RAF Mildenhall after arriving there from a deployment in the Middle East on 26 September.
A total of 12 F‑15s were expected to leave the United Kingdom en route to the United States that afternoon, accompanied by three aerial refuelling aircraft.
