Ryanair to close Thessaloniki base as cheap bus links to Memmingen launch

Ryanair announced the closure of its Thessaloniki base, cutting three aircraft and reducing flights. Meanwhile, Flibco and Flixbus have started a low‑cost bus service between Munich’s central bus station and Memmingen Airport.

Ryanair will close its base in Thessaloniki, removing three aircraft and significantly reducing its flight schedule. Sofia Airport hosts 30 airlines and 94 destinations, offering more affordable options than Thessaloniki for non‑low‑cost routes. Flibco and Flixbus operate 15 daily buses between Munich’s central bus station (ZOB) and Memmingen Airport. The bus journey to Memmingen Airport takes 1 hour and 25 minutes. Tickets for the Munich‑Memmingen bus start at €6.99 when booked online in advance; on‑board payment is higher. Ryanair’s base closure may affect route availability and revenue for airlines serving the Balkans. Low‑cost bus connections provide an inexpensive ground‑transport option for travelers to Memmingen Airport, potentially increasing passenger volumes.

Flibco’s CEO Tobias Stüber expects the company to add connections to Munich Airport in the near future.
