ATSB releases preliminary reports on four Sydney Airport safety incidents

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau issued preliminary reports on four incidents that occurred at Sydney Airport in July and August 2026, involving air traffic control procedural errors and runway incursions. The incidents included a Qantas Boeing 737 cleared to cross in front of a QantasLink Dash 8 during its landing roll on 27 July, a Jetstar A320 that braked abruptly to avoid a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 under tow on 9 August, and a Qantas Boeing 737 cleared to cross the runway in front of a Virgin 737 that had just been cleared for take‑off on the same day. Airservices’ roster modelling indicated elevated fatigue risks for staff at the time of many of the occurrences.

The reports highlight procedural lapses and potential fatigue‑related factors that could affect runway safety and operational control at the airport, prompting further investigation by aviation authorities.
