Romania signs contract for 12 Airbus H225M helicopters to replace Puma fleet

The Romanian government has signed a contract for twelve Airbus H225M multirole military helicopters, which will replace the IAR‑330 Puma fleet for conventional and special operations.
Contract and procurement
The contract was concluded with the French Armament General Directorate (DGA) and is funded under the European Commission’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme. This is Romania’s second order with Airbus Helicopters under SAFE, following earlier purchases of seven H160 and five H145 helicopters for public‑service missions.
Romania has previously ordered two H215M helicopters in a naval configuration.
Operational role
The twelve H225M helicopters will replace the Romanian Air Force’s IAR‑330 Puma fleet and will be used for conventional and special‑operations missions, including ground‑target engagement, attack, reconnaissance, surveillance, tactical protection and day‑and‑night airborne assault.
Industrial partnership
Airbus Helicopters CEO Matthieu Louvot said the selection would strengthen Romania’s industrial capabilities through the company’s long‑term partnership with IAR, with IAR Brașov expected to account for around 15% of the overall joint H225M procurement programme.
