China tightens jet fuel export controls amid global shortages

China has halted most fuel exports, including jet fuel, limiting shipments to Hong Kong and Macau. The move follows earlier restrictions and reflects domestic fuel stock concerns after disruptions in the Middle East.

China suspended oil exports to all destinations except Hong Kong and Macau until further notice.2 China imposed restrictions on fuel exports in March after the Iran war disrupted oil supplies from the Middle East.3,4 In July, Beijing relaxed the restrictions and began managing diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel shipments on a monthly basis.3,4 In October, major Chinese refineries did not receive approval to export petroleum products, including jet fuel, outside Hong Kong and Macau.3,4 The Chinese government linked the resumption of exports to restoring domestic fuel stocks to pre‑war levels.3,4 Reduced jet fuel exports could limit fuel availability for Chinese airports, affecting airline operations and scheduling.3,4
