Travel industry coalition urges EU to keep biometric travel voluntary and secure

ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA have formed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition. The group is asking EU policymakers to ensure the Digital Omnibus supports voluntary, secure use of biometrics and protects passenger choice.

The Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition was created by ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA.1234 The coalition is calling on EU policymakers to ensure the Digital Omnibus enables voluntary and secure biometric journeys for travelers.124 A survey cited by the coalition found that 74% of travelers would be willing to share biometric data instead of showing a passport or boarding pass.1234 The coalition wants the Digital Omnibus to adopt technology‑neutral rules that preserve passenger choice and allow data deletion on request.13 Members say biometrics can make travel more seamless for passengers and deliver significant operational benefits for airports and airlines.124 Voluntary, secure biometric solutions could streamline passenger processing, improving airport and airline operational efficiency.124 Technology‑neutral, privacy‑focused regulation may affect how airlines and airports integrate biometric systems into their distribution and revenue‑management workflows.13
