Greek authorities keep Crete on high alert as new storm wave approaches

The Greek government and Civil Protection agencies are maintaining maximum readiness for a new wave of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to hit Crete from the evening of October 2, after a recent period of intense weather that has already caused damage and saturated the ground.1,2
The Region of Crete remains under a Red Code alert until Sunday, with continuous coordination among state services, the armed forces, police, fire service and utility companies to restore accessibility and manage flood risks, while municipalities such as Heraklion have mobilised vehicles, personnel and traffic plans for possible road closures and resident relocations.3,4
A further coordination meeting is scheduled for Monday in Crete to discuss restoration efforts and additional measures with senior officials.2
