India tests scanner software upgrades to stop religious items triggering alarms

The civil aviation ministry is refining full‑body scanner algorithms to recognise traditional Indian attire and jewellery, and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is conducting trials of the updated equipment at Bengaluru and Cochin airports.1
BCAS is working with equipment manufacturers and vendors to update the software so daily religious items no longer set off alarms, and the scanners will show image‑agnostic mannequin silhouettes instead of detailed images; the changes are part of broader security enhancements as India expands its airport network from 164 to a target of 350 locations by 2047.1
