Ethiopia sees intensified fighting as government forces take Alamata and flights halt

Government-aligned forces captured the strategic town of Alamata in Tigray on September 28, while Tigrayan forces have moved into the neighboring Afar region. Telecommunications have been cut across much of Tigray and commercial flights have been suspended. Ethiopia’s army chief has accused Eritrea, Sudan’s army and Egypt of backing the armed groups involved in the conflict.1

The fighting is intensifying across northern Ethiopia almost four years after a peace deal ended a two‑year war in Tigray, and seven Ethiopian armed and political groups announced an alliance on September 20 to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and establish an inclusive transitional government.1
