Airline industry forms coalition to shape EU biometric travel rules
The airline sector has created the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition, bringing together ACI Europe, IATA, Amadeus, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA, to influence upcoming EU regulations on travel biometrics. The group is responding to the European Parliament's consideration of the Digital Omnibus proposal presented in 2025. It seeks to ensure that any biometric use in travel remains voluntary and secure for passengers.1
The coalition argues that passengers must always have a non‑biometric alternative and cites an IATA survey showing 74% of travelers would prefer biometrics over repeatedly presenting passports or boarding cards. It aims to shape the EU rules so that biometric data can be used voluntarily while maintaining security standards.1
