Bimal Patel assumed office as a judge on the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea after being administered his oath on Thursday at the tribunal's headquarters in Hamburg.1
Patel was elected with 115 of 168 valid votes and will serve a nine-year mandate, succeeding Neeru Chadha who concluded her tenure as vice president on Wednesday, while the tribunal operates under the UNCLOS framework to which 172 nations have acceded.1
