Mongolia-JICA agreement funds massive expansion of Chongqing Airport
Mongolia's Minister of Finance Mendsaikhan Enkhsaikhan and JICA President Akihiko Tanaka signed an infrastructure agreement on September 29, 2026 after Mongolia's Prime Minister Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh visited Japan, providing 158.3 billion yen for the Chinggis Khaan International Airport Expansion Project. The funding comes from JICA's STEP program and includes a 40‑year loan with a 10‑year grace period and a 1.1% annual interest rate. The project will increase the capacity of Chongqing International Airport by more than three times.1
The substantial capacity boost at Chongqing International Airport is expected to enhance passenger handling and support future growth in regional air traffic, impacting airline operations and airport revenue streams.1
