DoorDash launches autonomous delivery drone pilot in Northern California

DoorDash unveiled its own autonomous delivery drone and will start pilot operations in Northern California, serving restaurants such as Chipotle, Popeyes and Momo N Curry. The drone features six slow-spinning propellers designed to reduce noise and can carry the majority of the company's typical restaurant orders, which are small and light. DoorDash received FAA Part 135 air carrier certification for the drone in July.1

The company estimates that 80% of its typical restaurant orders are suitable for drone transport, indicating a potential shift in last‑mile delivery methods for food service. This move leverages the FAA certification to operate the drones commercially, positioning DoorDash as a new entrant in autonomous aerial logistics.1
