Germany to form up to 600‑person drone regiment in the army

The German defence ministry announced plans to create a new drone regiment for the Bundeswehr. The unit, part of the 10th Panzer Division, will operate loitering munitions with a range of up to 500 km.

The regiment will consist of up to 600 men and women and will have a range of up to 500 km.123 It will be equipped with loitering munitions (kamikaze drones) that are currently being tested.123 The regiment will be part of the 10th Panzer Division, which also includes the Panzerbrigade 45 stationed in Lithuania.123 The Bundeswehr has been introducing drones into its troops as a lesson from the war in Ukraine.123 The regiment will have its own company for electromagnetic combat.2 The unit’s 500 km operational range and loitering‑munition capability may require coordination with civil aviation authorities to manage airspace use near German airports.123

Loitering munitions are expected to be introduced into the regiment next year.3
